The Loudoun County Public Schools Regional Science and Engineering Fair (LCPS RSEF) was held on Thursday, 17 March 2011 at the Briar Woods High School. There were 245 projects presented by students from grades 9 to 12. Dr. Mark Pittelkau from Aerospace Control Sysetms LLC, Mike McFarland from Orbital Sciences Corporation, and Mark Fraser from EADS represented the AIAA as judges. First, second, third, and two honorable mentions were awarded. It was quite evident that the students are well aware that biomedical engineering, biology, environmental sciences, and energy are hot areas in technology these days. There were very few aerospace projects. Many students showed advanced knowledge of science and mathematics, which is a tribute to the teachers and school administration in Loudoun County, and especially to the students who put in the time and effort to learn and their parents. It was also evident that more girls than boys participated in the science fair. Let's not forget to encourage the boys as much as the girls to study math, science, and engineering. Judging the science fair was once again a rewarding experience.
